“You will feel a biting sting for just a few seconds, Dr. West,” Victor informed my beheaded friend as he injected a potent sedative into the left side of his face.

“I assure you I have felt far worse than a mere needle in my day, Baron,” he replied.

“I can attest to that,” I added, “as I used a much bigger pointed object to slice off his head.”

Victor shrugged off my comment while making the injection. “You should sleep through the entire procedure, my good sir. It will be most delicate work attaching the nerves of your head to your donor body so that they perfectly synch as one organism when charged by the energies of my galvanic generators, so I want to take my time with it.

“There, now. you should fall into a peaceful slumber within a minute; and when you awaken, you shall be a whole being again.”

“Many thanks, Dr. Frankenstein,” Herbert replied just before the drugs took effect. “I will owe you much after…”

All was then quiet on the operating table. I watched the ghastly but fascinating actions of Baron Victor Frankenstein with great interest and assisted the Baron now and then the best that one without any professional medical training possibly could.

Herbert’s eyes opened several hours later.

“Welcome back, sleepy head,” I quipped with a smile.

My less-than-good friend’s initially blurry vision rapidly cleared to see Victor walking over to him. “How are you feeling, Dr. West? Everything went well. The nerves are perfectly attached, your new body is sufficiently charged, and its retained muscle memory should enable you to move and walk without obstruction in less than an hour.”

“I… feel rather strange,” Herbert said as he lifted the arm of his newly attached body and looked at the rugged hands taken from a sculptor.

“That is quite normal following such a procedure,” the Baron assured him. “This body is not your own, and the joined nervous systems will take a brief period of adjustment as they fully mesh together. Nevertheless, the potent voltaic charge should make them synchronize to an enormous extent.”

“I do understand…” Herbert uttered in a state of relative calm… that is, until he raised the limb further to find that it possessed a powerful but misshapen musculature and was covered in shaggy tufts of hair.

“What… in the. name… of…?” was my friend’s not-very-happy reaction as he laid eyes on that grotesque appendage that was now his.

He was even more stunned and irate when he sat up and looked down to behold exactly what type of body his head had been enjoined to. It was one that resembled a hirsute Neanderthal, greatly muscled and looking as much simian as human. In fact, it was not too unlike his previous interim body, a wild man apparently shot to death by a German soldier somewhere in the Black Forest. This one, however, had a much thinner covering of hair and was not nearly as towering in height.

Herbert leapt off the metal table a bit awkwardly, but with a surprising degree of agility, nonetheless.
